Spring 2009
Will spring ever arrive...

The ice finally melted here at the airbase on May 2 so Mike was busy moving the dock into place so we could bring the float planes home. With the planes here and ready to go to work we waited patiently for mother nature to loosen her grip on the lakes up north and let spring arrive. On May 14, with just 2 days before the opener of fishing, the ice finally melted.

On May 16, we took our first guests into Smoothrock where they were greeted with a few snowy days but once again had great Lake Trout fishing. The Dave Ricke group released several nice lake trout in the 28"-31" category along with Northerns up to 40" and walleyes up to 27". The Jason Luedtke group released pike measuring in at 42", 2 - 39" and 2 - 38" as well.
The first group into Coles Lake had a little slower fishing this spring as it warmed up compared to other springs but they caught alot of quality fish. Keith Hartman released several nice walleye during his stay. He had a 28", 27", 25-1/2", 2-25", 3-23". Martin Griffin released also released a nice 25" walleye.

As the water warmed on Kenoji, the BIG PIKE started to move into the famous Hog Trough. Steve Easlor released a 43" pike, Brandon Easler released a 38" pike and Nick Easlor a 41" pike. The second group into Kenoji have been coming up for well over 20 years and they reported excellent walleye and northern fishing as well. Jeff Carpenter released pike measuring 43", 40", 39" and 38", Garry Torkilsen released a 41", Bob Dvorak released a 40" pike and Tom Schulz a 40" pike. The northern were hungry as they were not eager to give up their prey...

Wabakimi was again producing great Walleye fishing in the current areas and shallow bays. Ed Gregoire's group (the ice breakers) got into great Walleye fishing when the ice finally moved a bit and let them get to the current areas. Jim Hartman released a 29.5 walleye, Doug Gregoire a 26" walleye and Eugene Herzog a 27" walleye.
Steve Stremke, the Walleye Master, returned from his trip and reported exceptional fishing at Smoothrock. Steve and his brother William released two beautiful 28" Walleyes. They were impressed that there were such big schools of walleye and northern so close to the cabin. Sitting in the quiet pools out of the main current, they caught walleye consistently in the 18-24" category.
Oliver Lake warmed up quickly and the Fogarty's had great fishing. Mike Fogarty likes to fish with artificials. He did very well trolling the new X-Raps. When he caught a walleye with the x-rap he would stop and jig while catching numbers of walleyes.
With colder than normal temperatures, spring is still trying to arrive but overall the fishing and fish frys have been fantastic!

Until next time...great fishing!
