August 2008

The summertime bite is on at our outposts.  The fishing at all of our camps has been terrific.  Water temperatures are hovering between 63-73 degrees and the action has been, for the most part, consistent and steady.

At Wabakimi Lake, the walleyes are being caught in the 14-25' range on the secondary rock reefs.  A jig tipped with a crawler or minnow has been working the best.  Many walleyes in the 3-5 lb. range are being caught in the current areas in 6-13' of water as well.  A white twister tail has been working exceedingly well.  Wabakimi along with Kenoji have been our hottest "big pike" lakes.  Chuck Mattson released this beautiful 40" Northern.  Ron Tillery and Robert Wagner's 45" northerns are the biggest Northerns caught so far at Wabakimi.

Jim Tomasik, 27" walleye
Oliver lake summer fishing has been fantastic with the best action being over the falls on the Ogoki and Berg River.  The average size of the walleyes have been in the 3-7 lb. range with catches of 75-100 per boat for guests that are adept at fishing rivers.  The best combination has been a 3/8 oz. jig with a white power grub tipped with a piece of minnow (live or salted).  Jim Tomasik was hot on the trail of big fish with this 27" walleye.  The Wallace group reported having great Northern action on large Rattle Traps (pearl) and white Mepps spinners.  After fishing the river system at Oliver this summer with our guests, I have gained a great respect for the fight that these river walleyes give...they don't like to give up easy.  Monyeen Lake has been hot for numbers of 24-35" northerns as well.
Denise Feller, 38" Northern, Kenoji
Troy Meyer, 40" northern Kenoji

Kenoji Lake, often called Mr. Consistency, has produced tons of 2-5 lb. walleyes in the current areas, 7 pools and mid lake humps.  The famous "Tombstone" continues to produce not only sheer numbers of walleyes but also size!  The Meyer group returned from their annual trip and released three pike over 40".  Troy Meyer released a 40", Larry Meyer released a 40.5" and Big George Kinney topped the group with a 44"...Congratulations!

Coles Lake has been consistently producing catches of 2-7 lb. walleye in 10-18' depths.  The best combination has been a jig tipped with a crawler or minnow.  The Northerns have been reported to be out on many of the same reefs as the Walleyes and often they grab the smaller walleyes as you bring them up.  Also the walleyes in the evenings are still in the inflows to the lake and can be caught with 1/8 oz. jigs in 6-13' of water. For those fisherman that take the portage to August Lake, the Walleye fishing has been nonstop.  These fish are fished different as they are caught in 3-5' of water near rock structure throughout the Lake.  The best rig has been a 1/4 oz. jig and a 3" Sassy Shad or a floating Rapala in the 3-5" range, with the barbs pinched.

Smoothrock Lake continues this year to lead the pack with the most trophy and large walleyes being caught.  They are still being caught in the 5-15' range.  Since our cabin sits near the many inflows with a 5-15 minute boat ride to Spring Lake, Boiling Sands and No Name River, our guests are doing great.  Tim Benedict's group of 6 released some nice fish.  Large Northerns have been caught consistently on the Lake with tremendous action on the portage at Spring Lake.

At Slender lake, the large Smallmouth have moved out to the mid-lake humps and are being caught on 3" tubes, crankbaits and some spinner baits.  If you want to catch sheer numbers and don't mind using live bait, a slip sinker with a leech still produces best.

All in all summer fishing has been fantastic and we are filling up fast for 2009.  Contact us if you are looking for specific dates for 2009, now is the time to tie down your dates.

Thanks to our guests we have had a busy summer with great fishing and we look forward to seeing everyone again next year.

Until next time...great fishing!
