July 2008

The early summer fishing has been fantastic with the walleye remaining shallower than normal due to the cooler water conditions.  In many cases they are still located in the current and rapids areas where they spawned.  Water levels are above normal at our lakes and this creates great fishing opportunities in the necked down areas where the current is moving.  The good news is that many trophy northerns are still being caught in the shallow bays and adjacent reefs.

Many monster northerns have been released this year and Robert Wagner's was no exception.  Not only was it a 45" fish but it also was an extremely heavy fish.  Congratulations Robert!

Marty Weber tied into the walleyes and released a 29" and a 27".  Paul Killian released a 44" northern.  Taylor Jones also tagged a 27.5" walleye.

I had a chance to fish Oliver with Doug & Andrews Johnson this last week. We fished the Berg River and caught many walleyes in the 3-7 lb. category.

Brad Bruggink released a 40" northern below the Hamms Falls on the famous Chippewa Spoon.

The Richard Prairie family just came back from their trip and reported that the walleye fishing was fantastic.  Steve brought his new bride, Emma, on her first trip.  He found out she has the walleye touch and preferred catching them on plastic.  She caught many walleyes in the 3-4 lb. range with the largest measuring in at 26", about 7 lbs.

At age 10, Richard Prairie's grandson, Zachary, released this 24" walleye with his dad. Now 5 years later, he released this 26" walleye.   His largest walleye so far.

Way to go Zach!

While fishing for walleye with a 6 lb. test and ultralight rod, Leighton Britton released a 43" northern.  You never know what you might catch when you are fishing for walleye.

On the last day of Wes Reed's trip, he was fishing a shallow weedy area (I call the Boulder Field), when he tied into a Wolf Pack of Northerns and released a 40", 39", 37.5", 2-35" and a 33".  What a way to end a wonderful fishing trip in Ontario Canada.

Jeff Stepanek and Coby Kohn both released a 28" walleye on the Palisade River.

Coles Lake continues to produce tons of walleye in the 22"-24" category.  We are catching them in the shallow reefs and also in the slower current areas.

Gregg Genualdi returned from Smoothrock Lake and released a 41" northern on a Mepps Spinner.

The smallmouth have been on the prowl at Slender Lake.  When the brother team of James & Bill Stanger returned they reported they were "all fished out".  They released a 21" and an 18" smallmouth.  They said they released many in the 3-4 lb. category.

All in all we have had a cooler and wetter year than normal, but the fish seem to like it and the summer fishing has been excellent!

Until next time...great fishing!
