Spring 2007

Spring and early summer fishing has been fantastic.  Many trophy northerns have been caught and released at our lakes.  We started the spring out with low water levels, however, after the first week with large amounts of rain, the lakes were back to normal.  Many tremendous catches of walleyes centered around the incoming water flows.

Smoothrock lake produced nice lake trout for Dave Ricke's group.  Greg caught and released a 33" lake trout along with Jerusa's 32" lake trout and Dave's 34" lake trout.  The walleye fishing has been excellent.  Many walleyes in the 22-29" have been caught.  The largest walleye released by Jim Palmer was 29" and approximately 9-10 lbs.  Many trophy pike have been caught in the shallow bays and weed beds.  Some of the big northerns released were Dan Harrison - 41", Kevin Martin - 42" pike, Pat O'Brien - 42" pike and many others in the 30-40" category.

Wabakimi lake produced large northerns right from the opener and continues to do so.  Doug Gregoire released a 45 1/2" northern.  Not only was it a long fish but it had a great girth as well.  So far the largest northern released is a fantastic 48 1/2" by Evan Herken caught on a jig.  Believe it or not, Tim Benedict, one of our long term guests, released a 27 1/2" walleye and a 41" northern.  Congratulations Tim!  Ken Bauer also released a beautiful 27 1/2" blue walleye.

Oliver lake with the extreme high water levels started out alittle slow but the walleyes are biting extremely well.  Your's truly, (Mike) fishing with Kevin Norberg released a 29 1/2" walleye last week.  The pike fishing has been excellent with Dave Harper releasing a 41" pike, Chris Feller releasing a 40" pike and many others released in the 30-40" category.  Chris Feller reported that he had a fish on up to the boat that was easily 50" but the 'big one' got away!  The walleyes are definitely on a minnow bite and minnows seem to increase the daily catch by 3-4 times that of plastic alone.

Coles lake has been wide open right from the start with extremely large catches of walleyes in the 16-23" category.  Most of the larger fish will come out in July and August as the females go and feed on the reefs.  One of our groups from Kentucky, on their first trip, reported catching over 1100 walleyes during their stay.  The Chris Yanelli group reported catching nice northerns in the shallow bays on a fly rod.  The portage to August lake has been fantastic with walleyes biting on any lure that you troll or cast.  The Mishekow River is reporting great catches of walleyes by trolling rapalas in the current.

Kenoji lake is consistently producing excellent catches of walleyes and large northerns.  Almost every week our groups have reported catching walleyes in the 20-27" category and northerns in excess of 40".  The Jeff Stepanek group reported excellent walleye fishing in the rivers to the north of the camp.  Bryan Nelson released a beautiful 28" walleye and his friend, Tom Hallgren, released a nice 40" northern this past week.  John Scholtens released a 41" northern and Dick Brazile released a 41" northern.  Upon arriving at the lake, Jay Scholtens went to the 'hog trough' and the second cast he caught a 41" northern.  He continued to fish and caught a 37" and a 36" northern as well.

Until next time...great fishing!!!
